And it's replaced the other iPods (except the Nano and Shuffle). And still at the same price. And it also comes in BLACK. But I'm still going to get a Palm Pilot unless this iPod also has OGG support...
Also, notice the littler iMac G5 update. Now with built-in webcam and a remote control... and still at the old price. And the extinct eMac (DAMMIT, APPLE, SCREW OVER THE LOWEST END AGAIN WILL YOU).

But a screen that tiny sucks...I'd rather just get a portable DVD player or carry my laptop in my backpack. ;/
Battery life issues aside, of course.

A video iPod is worthless to me. To me, an iPod is a portable music device and nothing more. I'd much rather see Apple design a more versatile equalizer system or find a way to achieve gapless audio output than waste time on this video bullshit.

On the other hand, the development of a black iPod is at least one step in the correct direction...

I think Apple's on to something. I'm still not getting an iPod, but I think this is a smart move. I'm sure Microsoft isn't happy about this; Apple posted record profits yesterday and seems to be gunning for the home media center market. They were trying to slowly proliferate the X-Box into the home and slowly transform it into a media center with a subscription service. Apple has just one-upped them. There are far more iPods than X-Boxes, and they have already rolled out their subscription service, shortly after Microsoft couldn't even work out a licensing agreement with the record companies for their service. Sure, right now the shows on Apple's store all suck, but they seem to be ranging about $2 per episode, which is not bad if you compare that to DVD prices.
But let's look at the device. It can store 150 hours of region-free video. It uses h.264, so you can output to High Definition (which DVD can not do), and still plays music just as it used to. If you don't like the video features, don't use them. They don't seem to be jacking up the price for the video features. The movies from the store use DRM, just like the songs, but there's nothing stopping you from putting your own movies on the device.
And of course you're all ignoring the new iMac. The iPod and the new iMac hook up with an application called FrontRow to turn your machine into a 17" movie viewing screen with a remote. Hook your iPod to the machine, and then control it using the remote. of course, it works with other Apple computers, and bigger screens, but it comes bundled with the iMac. Apple's going to sell quite a few computers this way.

Apple released a black iPod Nano recently, but it wasn't that long ago. It also wasn't a full-sized iPod.

What about the U2 iPod that was released last year?

That doesn't count because U2 uglied it up by putting their signatures (and some would say songs) on it. The sales for that model were pitiful.

I wanted the U2 iPod for a while (didn't know it was signed, though), but the tradeoff in cost versus features were absurd. A shame, too, I had actually heard a few U2 songs around that time I didn't mind, and wondered if I'd like their music before. (Vertigo and Elevation, if you're curious.)
The Disney deal is big news, though.

Not really, they only have shitty shows like Lost and That's so Raven (along with three other shows that should have been cancelled long ago.

Wow, you totally mocked the last filler moments of a song, ignoring several minutes of lyrics before it. You totally 0wn3d it, yo.
And I don't know about Raven, but Lost is EXTREMELY popular. So, yeah. Call it shitty if you want, but it's still good for Apple.

Microsoft isn't happy? I think Sony would be less happy. Sony tried to bill the PSP as sort of a "iPod killer" return-of-the-Walkman device, that, you know, played music, played video, and played videogames. PSP vs. iPod was already an uphill battle when iPod just played music, but now that there's an iPod for video, too? That's gonna hit the PSP a bit harder than Microsoft, I'd think. If Apple plays it's cards right, they could single-handedly kill the usefulness of movies on UMD if they already haven't. All the PSP has to stand on at this point that Apple hasn't already beaten them out over is videogames, and the DS is slowly pulling ahead of the PSP in that market, with Nintendogs, Castlevania, Kirby, and all those other upcoming games (Mario Kart DS). It's starting to look a bit grim for Sony's PSP.

Sales of the DS have overall been higher than the PSP. That is, even though the PSP beat the DS in unit sales almost every month this summer, the install base of the DS in Japan and the US has never been less than the install base of the PSP. I'm not sure about Europe though, I don't have those numbers.

Not really, they only have shitty shows like Lost and That's so Raven (along with three other shows that should have been cancelled long ago. BANNED! Also, I know That's So Raven is one of Disney Channel's highest rated shows if not, the highest rated show. It's starting to look a bit grim for Sony's PSP. How is 4.5-5 million sales worlderwide of the PSP considering it's price, grim?

I bet half of that was for emulation. I think it will be considered grim once the DS starts churning out alot more good games. I wonder which handheld will win the holiday season.
