Apparently the pope is mad at us because we're not being intolerant enough. www.cbc.ca/story/world/national/2006/09/08/pope-canada.htmlI found this quote: ...to be particularly amusing. Gee, I wonder what would make Canadian politicians so keen on listening to the what the public wants and maintaining separation of church and state. Oh that's right, they're fucking sane.God, I miss the old pope.

The pope of the Catholic church is against gay marriage and abortion? Unheard of! No, I know what you're saying. John Paul II wasn't as vocal about his opinions, and was probably more open minded.
Oh the other hand Pope John Paul II probably thought gay people were going to hell too...so maybe just less vocal.

Yeah, John Paul II kicked ass. If not for him we'd still have "POKEMON IS THE DEVIL" websites.

"In the name of tolerance, your country has had to endure the folly of the redefinition of spouse," the Pope told a group of bishops from Ontario. "In the name of freedom of choice, it is confronted with the daily destruction of unborn children."
You know... it sounds like he's against the first amendment rights.
I hope he never aims this speech at the US, we've got the Constitution to wave in his... oh.. right.. Bush.. who openly supports Anti-gay laws. For blatantly religious reasons.
*sighs* Say, Leo, how hard is it to emigrate to Canada?

I'm catholic. I really don't care at all about gay marriage, though I admit that I'm strongly against abortion.
But truthfully, stuff like this puts the followers of my religion in a negative light.

We have a similar document called the Charter of Rights and Freedoms which pretty much does everything your Bill of Rights does. It guarantees, among other things, equal benefits and protection under the law for all Canadian citizens. Even the gay ones! *sighs* Say, Leo, how hard is it to emigrate to Canada? Apparently it's pretty tough, actually.

JP2 was pretty cool. New pope is, on the other hand, like "gotta make a stand!!!"
...which is quite unfortunate.
In any case, I'd rather live here than Canada. Sorry Leo.

I figured you guys had something similar, I mean, it's a key part of any free country. I was more or less being snarky about the dubious condition of our own rights-giving document. Although, strictly speaking, the document itself doesn't give us our rights, it just spells them out. Since we are "endowed by [our] Creator with certain unalienable Rights", or so says the Declaration. *sighs* Say, Leo, how hard is it to emigrate to Canada? Apparently it's pretty tough, actually. Aww nut bunnies.. And people wonder why religion is falling out of favor with the youth of today. When religious leaders time and again express this kind of view point, it doesn't exactly score any points for their cause.

When religious leaders time and again express this kind of view point, it doesn't exactly score any points for their cause. Definitely. Though I think organized religion as a whole is wrong anyway; it's just something else that puts people in a group, usually with self-proclaimed "more right than anyone who doesn't want to be in the club" type fire. But seriously, people get so blinded in their "religion". One day it tells you to love everyone, then it tells you to hate someone with a specific attribute. Of course, to be fair, these are usually perversions of the religious practice, which in general is usually generally moral at its base.

Yeah, all the hate comes from the people, not the religion.

Ah, what's new? My rather large extended family is made up of primarily Irish Roman Catholics, and let me tell you, it doesn't matter to them who the pope is, he's still an asshole.
Re: Emigrating to Canada, it apparently can't be too hard, since, IIRC, more people legally immigrate from the US to Canada than from Mexico to the US.
As for the Pope's speech, my first reaction was that he was asking people to make fun of religion. Just like with the Mohammed comics, anyone who tries to suppress free speech should have it shoved down their throat. However, considering where that got me recently, I will refrain from doing it here.

Apparently it's pretty tough, actually. Aww nut bunnies.. Hypothetical question, why would you want to give up and move to another country instead of rallying public support to improve your own country ideals? Imagine if civil rights activists in the past decades of the US just gave up fighting prejudice against people of color and encouraged everyone to move another country that would accept them, for example. I have a feeling that only applies to certain youths in certain areas. Also, why is John Paul II is getting a pat on the back concerning the subject on the topic? It's not like his views are any different than Benedict XVI.

... because it was funny? You know I was kidding right?
But seriously, do you really think the American public would actually rally to such a call? These activists are way to busy fighting for the rights of individuals to be bothered with the rights of mankind on a whole. They might be able to slip it in between lobbying for African American rights and their later lobbying for Asian American rights. But if the Hispanic rights people need help, they'll have to give Humanity a rain check. And of course, if the Hispanics get a special amendment, then the Native Americans will want one too and that means even more activists to march on Capital Hill, so Humanity, when we're done selfishly fighting for the rights of our own groups, we'll get to you.
But it doesn't really matter. People are selfish and short-sighted wherever you go. I could go to Canada, Great Britain, Australia, anywhere, and find exactly the same thing. Selfish people fighting for their own betterment under the banner of 'rights'.
Something big will have to change about humanity before we can really improve the ideals we operate on. Otherwise it will just simply be more and more complex variations on 'Money Talks'.
Well that goes without saying. No trends in society are absolute with the exception of birth, aging and death. That is to say, we all are born, age and then die.
*shrugs*
Meh.. I hate politics.

Sorry if I took your statement a bit too seriously, but there are people in this country who keep saying stuff similar to this over and over again. It was especially bad during the 2004 elections.

Come to think of it, this is a very good point, and I bet it has something to do with how much cooler a guy John Paul II was in general. Better PR, if you catch my drift.
