As an Irish Catholic, I can say this is the sort of stuff that makes me nervous of my own religion. Personally, I think gay rights are fine. As for abortion, well, Catholosism teaches the value of life to be extremely important so honestly I am against it. However, I'm not enough of an activist to do anything about it and I know that anyone having to consider abortion has enough on their plate already without having to worry about people forcing their decision for their own reasons. Hypothetical question, why would you want to give up and move to another country instead of rallying public support to improve your own country ideals? Imagine if civil rights activists in the past decades of the US just gave up fighting prejudice against people of color and encouraged everyone to move another country that would accept them, for example. Isn't America made up of people who gave up fighting prejudice and moved to another country?

It doesn't bother me if someone is against something personally, but once that person tries to enforce it on someone else, I get mad.
...and just ignore all of the ways I could get slammed for hypocrisy, okay? Yeah.
So, I'm for abortion and gay marriage. It doesn't feel at all wrong to me. If someone is personally against these, I have no problem, but if they try to BAN other people from being able to do these, I get angry as mentioned.

It doesn't bother me if someone is against something personally, but once that person tries to enforce it on someone else, I get mad. On the flipside, if someone is against murder, and suddenly sees someone about to stab somone else in an alley... Of course you could argue that as long as what you do dosn't harm anyone else you shouldn't interfere, which is a perfectly valid point. However, technically abortion is harming (killing) somone else, or is it? That's the whole problem and why abortion is so damn tricky. If it is murder, then intervening to stop (or make illegal) abortion is justified, because you are stopping people getting hurt. Of course, there are arguments forward and back about whether an embryo is a human being, what "rights" does it have, how it represents life etc. etc. My personal view is that an embryo does have the potential for life and symbolises life early on, so should be respected, and only aborted if, for example, its birth puts its mothers life at serious risk.

I don't know, it's a somewhat valid point.
The missing piece here is the belief that religion should bring good to society -- and if we are to believe that, then a religion recommending violence (bad for society) would be shirking from its duty as a religion.
Of course, that doesn't stop people from using religion for their own selfish ends, they'll be doing that until the human race is gone.
