OK! So the Anime Central convention is coming 'round again in Chicago and I know some of you all live close enough, so I have but three questions for all y'alls. 1) Who's going? 2) Who's cosplaying? 2a) What are you going as? I, for one, am going and I shall be that maniacal murderous master of the dark arts of destruction: BLACK MAGE!! This costume kicks ass.. only thing left is to get a black, long sleeved shirt and do something for the eyes. Major kudos to my grandmother (who will also be going) for making both the hat and the robe from scratch.

Nice costume!
Was considering hitting ACEN this year, but will instead be going to both Otakon and AX. (Otakon had been scheduled for some time, but AX was a bit of a surprise/convenient thing due to circumstances.)

Chicago's too far away, unfortunately. There's some sort of anime convention in Durham, NC I'm gonna try to hit up in a few months instead; the guy that played Makito in Magiranger will be there, so I'm psyched.
Stacy Christensen, aka Zingela, a midi sequencer at vgmusic.com, got me an extra one of those Fatal Fury caps that were out and about years ago, and she's finally mailing it soon, so I'm gonna try and scrounge together a Terry Bogart costume since it wouldn't be that expensive. About the hardest part to throw together would be the jacket; the red Converse sneakers, white undershirt, and blue jeans would be simple.
Ignore the fact that I am black with little-to-no black hair instead of white with blond hair.

Ku: Aw nuts! Well come next year, man! It's fun. Although I may yet be going to Otakon this year, so we may meet up there! And thanks for the compliment.. I'm really fired up about this one. Last year I went as Totoro.. was a tad hot.. this one should be less so XD
Arrow: If there's one thing I've learned from going to ACEN, it doesn't matter if you actually look like the person.. when they obsess over a fat man in a Sailor Moon costume (Sailor Bubba, he is called), all bets are off when it comes to worrying XD

I'll be hitting up the con with my homies. You'll likely find me in the game room fagging it up on the DDR machines, or ITG machines if they have them.
Don't be afraid to talk to me or something. I might be wearing a ninja hood, shirtninja or otherwise, mixed with something that isn't ninja-esque.

For the first time in 4 years, I can't go.
Why?
ACEN is during my finals week.
I'm hitting AX and Otakon instead if all goes well.

That is one awesome costume, dude. =P
Uhm, yeah, can't come for obvious reasons. But hey, someone should SERIOUSLY go there as Phoenix Wright. =o

The hair is the hardest part of the costume. You know someone's got to be.

Spawz: More than likely you will see me before I see you, given how visible this costume is XD. But have no fear, the daggers I carry will be fake, so you have no worry of a stabby death should you wish to approach me.
Hedges: Well that, in the words of so many great generals and presidents "just plain sucks".
My cousin is having the same problem, but she might just be able to make it. She, my grandmother and I will be there with my aunt and MAYBE my uncle. And I, for one, plan to keep returning year after year!
H: Thanks! But, uh, why can't you come? I mean, you could conceivably fly over to the US by plane... granted it would cost untold sums of money just to GET here, but hey! It's a convention, a large number of people will be unbathed and largely similar to hobos anyway, so you'll have nothing to worry about. You can probably just sleep by the place where the Spoony Bards hang out, you can pretend to be a dozing band member.
or not XD
Kulock: The hair wouldn't be that hard. I've seen some pictures and based on what I've seen at the previous ACEN, it is possible. Just use that super powerful hair gel they use at these Cons that makes your hair similar to concrete, only less clean looking and there ya go!

I went to ACEN last year with my dudes, and we were planning on going to Otakon this year, BUT NOW I CAN'T GO so I don't think I'm going to any cons this year.

Don't think I'll be going to too many cons this year, but I'm hopeful to getting back to Otakon. Hopefully this time I can actually enter the video game tournaments and buy NeoGeo carts.

Unfortunately, I'm on the East Coast with nowhere near enough money to get me out to Chicago and one of two finals (amusingly, my Japanese final) the day after the con. However, I get two cons here in the D.C. area (AnimeUSA in Virginia and Katsucon right here in D.C.), I have plans to go to Otakon in August, and if I want, it's easy to get up to North Jersey for AnimeNEXT for a day or two, so I'm satisfied for the time being con-wise.
As far as your costume goes, Keith, I'd recommend going to Express Men or Old Navy or ordering from L.L. Bean. I have lots of black long-sleeved shirts from those three stores, and they're all comfy and well-made. I'd especially recommend shirts from Express Men, though, as if you can still find black, long-sleeved shirts there, they're the lightest material of the three, and probably the best to wear to a May con if you get hot easily. One nice about your costume, though, is that you don't have to worry about makeup or hair, with a good deodorant, you won't have to worry about messing anything up by sweating. (Just be sure to have the good deodorant. "Essence of Otaku" is NOT pleasant.) In addition, kudos to your grandma on the costume. From the picture you posted, it looks excellently crafted. I'm surprised that she wants to be going, though. I wouldn't let my family within twenty meters of a con. Given, the only person who ever offered to go to a con with me was my father when I was younger, but I didn't want to have to explain to him some of the..."things" that happen at a con.
Speaking of cosplay, I need to get my butt in gear and start getting my costume for Otakon together. First on the shopping list: platform boots in a size 13...

I've never been to a con in my life.
I'm not planning on attending any anytime soon, either.

Eric: The daggers I will have will be real enough to stab with if I really feel like it, so don't press your luck ;D
Mirai: Thanks. Although I'll more likely be hitting Goodwill.. I can't really afford name brands.
Heh, the real irony is that my Grandmother, Aunt, and Cousin had to convince me to go. They had been there the last two years and I, being the semi-anti-social type didn't think it would be too fun. But they persuaded me to go, thus I showed up there last year as Totoro (another costume my grandmother made for me, by hand, with furry material that was HOT to wear.. but I did get hugs from cute girls so... XD). I had fun, but I definitely wanted a less wearisome costume this year 'round, hence Black Mage.
Onii: You're missing an interesting, if not entertaining experience. You should go to at least one, just to see it.
So many people, most in costumes.. all laughing, all having a good time.. it's, in a way, a very freeing experiance... when every one of them are dressed up in such outrageous get-ups that it really doesn't matter what you look like, or what you're dressed up like, whatever it is, you can't possibly feel bad about anything about yourself.

I think it's more the fact that none of the big ones come anywhere close to me, and I'm not, well, generic, so to speak. I've had friends who've gone, but me...? I dunno. Maybe someday.

Your aunt and grandma are the ones who like to go to anime conventions.. Wow. I am shocked, in awe, slightly amused in a good way of your family, Keith.
Anyway, as for the black shirt(s), while I most certainly won't diss Goodwill or thrift stores (I got one of my favorite ties at a Goodwill, in fact.), I'd still recommend trying Express, Old Navy, and L.L. Bean. Plain, long-sleeved t-shirts aren't too expensive, probably about $20 tops, and considering how long sleeves are currently out-of-season, you could probably get them at an even better sale price.
And Lukos, if you have any interest in anime and manga, video games, J-music, or anything having to do with Japanese culture, I would recommend going to at least one con in your lifetime. I understand the distance problem, having one con in my state until two years ago (the now-defunct Shoujocon -_-;; ) and until that two years ago, as I've probably said once or twice before, my only way to get to a con was for my father to bring me (No.). Though, as you're older than I was when I first wanted to go to a con, you could probably get around the "go with daddy" thing. Anyway, as far as location goes, you live on Long Island, right? If I'm correct in that assumption, your closest con would be AnimeNEXT in North Jersey. If it's anything like I remember, it's a great first con, not too small, not too big, and hopefully, with a well-done cosplay masquerade. Regardless, I would like to echo what Keith said. An anime convention is an amazing sort of place where regardless of how one is, everyone can come together to have a good time. Everyone at a con is weird in their own unique way, and with the possible exception of die-hard 4chan /b/tards, everyone gets along well, everyone jokes around withouth a care in the world, and most are there just to have fun and make new friends. Really, I recommend that you give one a try, sometime. I doubt that you'll be disappointed.

Me? I live in a suburb of Boston. Some of my friends have gone to Anime Boston, but that's about it I think. I dunno. I just think it'd be rather awkward as a whole...

In that case, please forgive my false accusation as to your location. (A few days ago, in pondering the MC's location diversity, I was wondering if we had anyone here from up in New England.) Still, you have Anime Boston coming up, and if you're willing to venture into the wilderness of Connecticut, you have ConnectiCon in Hartford, and I recommend that you at least give one con a try in your life. Awkwardness is good for you!
...
Well, that is, as long as you don't obtain an awkwardly-charming, androgynous stalker...but except in the most exteme cases, the chances of that happening to someone are really quite low.
