Finally, a game where the main character and his love interest aren't the lone hopes of a doomed world! That being said, we can now go back to the games that seem more in the style of FFIX. I really wouldn't mind, myself.

The problem isn't so much they're not out to save the world as it is they really have no use storyline-wise.

Yeah, I'm feeling that they are the "Armada kids" in FFXII and they were dumped in the game to appeal to majority of FF fans--teens.
