... for turning in a gun to the proper authorities only moments after finding it in his school bathroom. Read HereHere's where Zero Tolerance is absolute bullshit.

That's incredibly stupid. The kid did something good, then suddenly BAM! EXPELLED!

Somebody was quoted in the article, saying this was a "serious infraction of school rules". What kind of example are they teaching children by telling them this? Kids that age might even interpret that rule as walk away from any trouble that's going on. I think the kid meant well, and the situation could've been a lot worse ie a toddler blowing his face off. Stranger things have happened.
Oh a pelet gun. Well a toddler could've blew his pinky toe off then.

This is beyond words. Seriously. There is nothing constructive that can be said about this. The mere fact that he possessed the thing for all of ten minutes before handing it over to the school was enough to be considered a "serious infraction". Serious infraction??
And the best they can offer is alternative school? So the kid now has to go to school with the kinds of people who more than likely brought the god damned thing to the school in the first place?? All because he did the right thing??
There are no civilized words to express how furious this makes me. Talk all you want about video games making our youth violent, but right there in that school, that young man has been given a very potent lesson: Doing the right thing gets you in trouble.
I hope Mr. Thompson is reading that article, because right there - just that one experience more than likely did more damage to his ethical senses than any god damned video game ever could!

I think I'd really have to agree with Keith H. here.

There's a reason Florida has its own tag on Fark. Just another example of idiocy here.
Hopefully it's corrected, and hopefully somebody does lost their job over this. It doesn't even require explanation, it's so stupid -- and when that's the case, somebody sure deserves to get fired!

While this does seem like an incredible overreaction, take a look at this line:
"School officials said there is additional information about the case they cannot disclose because it would be unfair to Ryan."
We might be missing a crucial piece of information here.

I suppose... but they're not helping their case by withholding information.
Further more, unless that story is false, I can't imagine what benefit they would get from not coming forth. This could result in serious litigation, the sooner it's over the better.
But who knows. Still.. on the face of it, it seems absolutely outrageous.

I suppose... but they're not helping their case by withholding information. Which is precisely why we should be looking at this skeptically. They're purposely withholding information that helps their case out of concern for the kid. Whatever it is, it probably casts the situation in a different light.

While this does seem like an incredible overreaction, take a look at this line: "School officials said there is additional information about the case they cannot disclose because it would be unfair to Ryan." We might be missing a crucial piece of information here. Given that the facts are: -He found a pellet gun -He handed it over 10 minutes later -He didn't massacre half the school populance I think we can be pretty confident that A) there's no sinister secret hiding in the background, and B) the school officials are doing their best to cover their asses. "additional information about the case", huh. Now if he found it and attempted some target practice around the school for 10 minutes, that would be different. That'd be quite a coverup on the school's part too ... which would insinuate competance, which clearly isn't in play here to begin with.

And I'm holding something back about Leo, that I don't want to say because it would be unfair to him.
(Seriously, that strikes of "This is going on your permanent record.")

I somehow doubt his mother would be rallying 30+ supporters if there was some deep dark secret that involved Ryan that would further guilt him in this case. While the public may not know the details, one would assume his family does... and they're clearly very outraged by this entire scenario.

Sounds to me like he's had other ofenses in the past, like fighting, if they have to evaluate him. Could be a straw on the camel's back kind of thing.
