Working in retail is probably the single worst thing to do during the holidays. I don't too many angry or mean people, but tonight a lady took the cake. I just got to my cashier post at Target and my supervisor said that they needed help making whip creams in the Starbucks area. So, I switched off my light and helped the guests that already had their stuff on the belt. But when a woman in line started putting her things up, I said as politely as I could, "I'm sorry, ma'am, but I'm gonna be closing down right now." She looked at me and scoffed and said, "Oh... so does that mean I have to go stand in line and wait again?" like I was closing down just 'cause I felt like it. Why can't people understand that if we're closing down a lane it's not just for shits and giggles, it's 'cause we need to get stuff done! And it always seems like lady luck won't smile upon us cashiers for a loooong while. It's always packed when, oh, the computer decides to freeze up and won't accept a credit card. And all the guests want big things that are a hassle to deal with and breakable things that you have to handle like a newborn baby or things that don't have a barcode or merchandise identification numbers on it and they don't know the price and it's always "the last one on the shelf." Grrr... I'm so exhausted. So... anyone else here work in retail and have some gnarly stories?

Some girl was getting an attitude with me. Started yelling at me for going on my break when she wanted help with something. I told that bitch off, and said I'll go on break when I want to. Then I sat outside for a while, and played with the garbage. I had a couple beers, and went home. On my way home I shit my pants, and rolled around in somebody's yard.
Ok what really happened was a girl got mad at me, because I went on break when she wanted help. I was fired from that job.

The stories.
Oh, the stories.
...yeah, the way I figure, any retail job I'm working from now on I'm going to quit the moment December rolls around.

I had, like, a 20 person line-up when I worked as a cashier the other night :-K all the customers were complaining that it was retarded to have just one cashier last night however I had a manager who could back me up when I got traffic

OK, so what most people at supermarkets around my parts do in that situation is that they actually have a sign saying "This cashier post is about to close down, please choose another line", at which point they help whoever remains in that line at that point, after which they're free to leave on their other assignment, break, or what have you. Truthfully, I'd be pretty ticked off too if I had been standing in line and the cashier closed it down just as I would have been the next in line.

I had to go into a Meijer to see if I could transfer gift card balance from one to another (OK, kind of a regift, but it wasn't by me). They couldn't do it (but oddly enough, I could just use it to help pay for another, bigger one), but the stuff I saw them have to deal with at the customer service desk while waiting in line... I just felt terrible for them. Wow. Ah, but see, there's an etiquette in the US, and he followed it. There are lights above the various numbered lanes, and if it was on and the cashier switches it off, that's to signify that they're going to close, but they'll help the last few people who were already in line. You're not supposed to line up from there, which is just what the woman did. Or at the very least, you should ask, "Are you open?" (I've had a little luck with that a few times when I didn't have much.) Edit: Oops, scratch that, he said the woman was already in line. TECHNICALLY he was in the wrong then, but with the position he was in, I'm sure things would've been worse for him if he didn't go help.

The only real problem I've had at the register is that sometimes I'll have no one for... ever, and then one person decides to buy something so everyone else decides to finish browsing, too. So I end up with a ten person line. :<
..Oh, and I suppose there's also also the the fact that every time I'm actually told to do something is when people decide they actually need help. It's like they don't realise I work there until I.. actually start working (Because clearly the guy standing behind the register is just a customer)
