After the last two episodes, this episode was kind of lame.

That probably had one of the most darkest endings I have ever seen. Well, this and the ending to Scott Tenorman Must Die
Still, a great send up of all those hope-inspiring hockey films

Having Wiki'd it as well, I have this to say.
If they were going for shock value, it sounds like they succeeded.

It didn't shock me. I was expecting it out of South Park.
It was the way they did it that saddened me. D:
But I wouldn't say it was "lame", but it obviously can't compare to SEA OTTER ATHIESTS. It still amused me, and hey--no morals SO SHUT UP

Reading the description, it seems like an unusual South Park, in that it plays itself as a "Downer" episode for apparently no real reason except Shock Value.
I mean, most of the other "Downers" I recall were politically-motivated, or came from scenarios like the one that spawned "Return of Chef", but this... this just felt like it was "there" because they couldn't think of anything -new- to satire and decided to just make a "downer" parody of old cliched Sports Movies.

It's not so much a "shock value" thing until the very end, they're just doing a sendup, But it gets kind of bland because you generally know where they're going with it.
But the last minute or so was pretty cruel. I wouldn't say it topped "Return of Chef" in ANY way, but it was a sudden "Holy crap" thing.
At least there's an episode once in a while where Stan has some sort of personality. Chasing down his bike and smacking about on the pavement was kind of surreal, since usually that sort of thing's reserved for Cartman or Kenny.

Was it really that much "shock value"? I was expecting the Nelson kid to die the whole time XD But more, like, abrupt. That whole ending was pretty...morbid, but not so much surprising. The scene wouldn't have been as depressing without Queen in the background, though. Oh, but you know what does bother me, is that apparently they threw in the Steve Irwin jokes because people were bothered by it in the Satan episode--more specifically, his wife, who wanted the episode like. Off because she was worried her kids would see it. I mean, if it was just a bunch of newscasters throwing a hissy fit then that's one thing, but it seems a little over the line to do that, even if his wife was being a little nutty for worrying her kids would see it when it's more or less her responsibility to make sure none of that happens It's friggin' South Park. But still, come oonnnn. ...although upon reading it again it seems more like she was all "STEVE PROBABLY WOULD HAVE FOUND IT FUNNY BUT IT SEEMS TO SOON " which seems like way more agreeable WHY AM I TALKING ABOUT THIS

The punchline was that a little boy died of cancer.

I was expecting the boy to die the whole time, so that didn't really shock me, but man, seeing those hockey players inflict pain on those toddlers like that, that made me laugh pretty hard.

The best part was how the one guy picked Ike up and just started punching him.

I LIVE IN ADAMS COUNTY!
Thats the fun fact of the day.
Edit: Also, that episode is pretty funny to any one who follows hockey.
The avs and redwings had a long standing rivalry, so I was laughing my ass off when they made detroit look like the bunch of ass holes they are.
