I took a dslreports test, and got 48/489. I really should call my ISP tomorrow and have them take a look at that.

Your download speed : 534 kbps or 66.7 KB/sec. Your upload speed : 215 kbps or 26.9 KB/sec.
Which is damn fine for me.

Funny thing is, my ISP has an advertised speed of 4000/512. But a few days ago I got 485/38, now it's pretty much done a 180.

sanius, how far away from the central office are you? DSL speeds are reduced based on your distance from your carrier. I believe DSL becomes greatly ineffective after 7,000 feet or something in that proximity.

Read the fine print; "4000/512" is the maximum possible speed, but the further you are, the more it sucks. Basically it comes down to the fact that phone lines were never meant to be network wires.

Are you sure you wanna be posting your address on the internet? Doesn't sound safe, at least privacy-wise.

DSL or Cable, the effect still exists. Voltage is lost as it travels great distances. Although Multiplexers may be used to extend the coverage, data loss incurs during the process.

Yes, but the effect is much less pronounced with cable.

I'd have the fastest internet known to man if it was economically feasible.

Sounds about right. My upstream reeks.
E] Weird. My downstream seems to deteriorate a lot the farther away I test it from, but my upstream stays pretty much at 45 KB/s wherever.
E2] Yeesh...my downstream gets to about 172 KB/s from the Philippines (Yes, I'm trying to find a server as far away from me as possible)
