Okay, I think I must've done something wrong, for Gens refuses to start properly now. Every time I start up the exe, it just... open the box and freezes. I can't even access the menu.
I'm blaming my video card because I could run it just fine before.

I'm blaming it on your resolution. Try turning it to 16-bit. AFAIK, Gens only works with 16-bit desktops.

I'm not, because I run it on a 32-bit desktop-- it just changes the resolution itself.

I've made sure the color settings are 16-bit, and it's still freezing.

He's right. Kega emulates the Sega CD, 32X, even the 32XCD (I think), as well as the Game Gear and Master System. Only reason I keep Gens around is for Kaillera play.

Question: can Kega do the realtime scaling fun stuff like all good modern pc emulators?

But is Kega bloated?!1?!! Only time I ever notice it is when I start using filters (2xsai, hq2x, etc), the framerate starts to get kind of choppy. And hey, Gens stopped reckognizing my CD drive about a year ago, so Kega is the only other logical option anyway.

There's a nice fast blur in Kega that is meant to be sort of similar to the way a real Genesis is slightly horizontally blurred. That's about the extent of my filter use, I don't normally use them. In fact, I normally advocate against their use.
Kega is also more accurate to hardware than Gens. Neither is 100% accurate, but you won't have that for a good long time anyway.

Microsoft was pretty retarded in totally neglecting any and all ASPI support, meaning any program that reads from a CD (especially homebrew) made before XP became standard is probably broken. This includes Gens, which never was really XP compatible (as far as I remember) and isn't being updated anymore. There are 3rd Party ASPI drivers for XP, but they don't always work.

Last I heard, Gens was being rewritten from scratch.
