There was a game I my friend had on his computer, where you were a wizard and collected gems in an old school side scrolling platformer.
I'm coming to terms with the fact that I will probably never find this game again. Does anyone have any idea which game it is? (and yes I realise it's not enough of a description).
ITT I want us to post 2D platformers, preferably full games we can download. I'm on a retro trip at the moment, and have free time after midnight on most nights, and I want to get back in to games.
So post your best platform games.

I hate to hijack a thread, but since he's already talking about looking for a 2d platformer:
The game I'm looking for was on this big (pirated?) collection CD for the PC it was a contemporary platformer/shooting game where you played as and African American American cop during an alien invasion. The graphics were bright and colourful and shooting aliens made them burst into big chunks that would fly about and land on the ground, then stay there for a bit (as opposed to instantly disappearing, which I liked). Another distinguishing factor about it was that despite being a fairly classicly themed platformer (I played it around 1995, don't know how long it had been released for at the time) it actually had a fair bit of dialogue in it which was actually humourous and had been worked on a bit. Some of it was with civilians during the level (One kid goes "Wow, nice gun, can I have it?" to which our hero replies, "Nah, you'll probably blow your foot off or something").

Kind of makes me think of Halloween Harry, except that didn't have an African American cop and no dialogue. hharry.netfirms.com/

Yeah, that's the first game that came to mind as well, and got undone for the same reasons Toxic mentioned. As far as oldschool platformers are concerned... What do you get when you take a few pages from the book of Sparkster, a few pages from the book of Sonic the Hedgehog, and bind it in a Pirate-themed cover? (Also known as Cap'n Havoc) Try it out - apart from the fact that the game is quite tough but also pretty darn good, you'll have a laugh at the opening story sequence and scream "DUDE SONIC TAILS AMY AND A CHAOS EMERALD WTF!!!" Well okay, maybe not exactly that. But still.

and, on the subject of Old School games, does anyone remember an old game called LOOM? I dunno if it really a platformer, more of a click game, but since we're also talking about old games we've played... Oh what I wouldn't give to play it again...

It's still an incredibly fun game despite the graphics. There are still a couple parts that scare me (trust me, they made some scary stuff in that game.) And if we're going old school 2d, Commander Keen. Discuss.

Never remembered it from actually playing or seeing it, but several other LucasArt games reference it somehow (there's even a pirate in the Scumm Bar in Monkey Island with a big "Ask me about Loom" sticker, and talking to him effectively gives you and advertisement for the game) and I've heard it mentioned when doing looking up Adventure games.

Man, I know Loom. Always make sure to write down the drafts because they are RANDOM and you WILL NEED THEM.

Yeah... you know, that's one game that I think could really benefit from this new era of gaming. The premise itself is simple, and the execution couldn't be easier. It just needs updating to it's graphics and sound. I mean, if Oblivion can be made, surely LOOM can. Imagine... full 3D, high quality audio with a Myst-like semi-ambient soundtrack.
ahh, to dream a dream.

Since there's a lot less variables in gameplay in click adventures, they could probably get away with better than Oblivion graphics on the same system as Oblivion. Yeah, I really don't see why they're not doing this more for PC.
