I mean Power Rangers was popular, (only Pokemon eventually beat it in terms of $money$) but during it's time in the spotlight it gained enough popularity to embed itself into the saturday morning programming block. So it'll be around forever, even if the only people who are watching it are kids waiting for more popular shows to come on, and Arrow. There are at least 17000 people you need to add to that "and Arrow" remark. But besides that, you pretty much hit the nail on the head.

Speaking of Anime, some storys work out quite well in the Anime form that would be far harder in live action, just look at Gundam/G-Savior Oh, wait til you see the G-Saviour parody I whip up for the next Gundam panel...

*Kulock sits in and pretends to understand what's going on* "Oh, that's fascinating. So... they pilot robots, do they?" (Actually, I feel terrible because I forgot the two or three series that were recommended and sounded interesting. One was that OVA series, like 0083 or something, that was tragic and had that kid separate from most everything else...)

You're thinking 0080, I think, Kulock. That's the real tragic one. 0083 was comparibly higher-budget but much cheesier, having a sappy love triangle plotline.
If, of course, you watch ONE UC Gundam, it's generally a good idea to get anything that takes place between 0079 and "Char's Counterattack", as that's basically the major inspiration for any modern Gundam material.
In terms of AC ones, it generally depends on how you feel about UC Gundam and what you'd like to see different: My personal fave is G Gundam, but I don't really recall G Gundam having much of a big fanbase, at least not before Bandai Dubbed it. (In fact, I believe people used to treat it as "The Black Sheep" before we got crud like "SD Gundam Force". I mean, at least G Gundam wasn't outright kiddified, yes?)
