So. Ashuku stayed the weekend and he brought his Gamebridge over. We plug it in and pop in the install disc...
"USB 2.0 has not been detected. You must also install Windows XP SP2."
This is a bummer, because I thought maybe if I got some money for Christmas, I'd pick up a Gamebridge myself.
Well, besides the fact I'd have to bite the bullet and install SP2 and hope my computer will actually boot up and work in the same mannor it always has (Yes, I am still paranoid about stories of SP2 doing stuff to folks computers, especially if it's been a long time since they installed SP1), I need to get USB 2.0 ports.
New Egg tells me that there are some cheap PCI cards for USB 2 for as low as $7.99.
My question is: Is that going to be fast enough? I mean, I've seen adaptors that will let you plug USB2 stuff into USB1 ports, but I'd imagine that would be hilariously slow. PCI isn't the most blazing fast interface, either.

That's funny...I've used USB2.0 devices on XPSP1 before.

I've used USB2 on SP1 also. Odd.
Also, I've used a PCI expansion card before, it's plenty fast.

It's fast enough for a gamebridge. You may see some slowdown for USB data transfer, but it's not that much.
And SP2 is really important for everyone using Windows XP to have. If you haven't installed it at this point, you're putting your machine at great risk.

I used to be against installing SP2 as well, but in my experience, they must have changed something between the time I uninstalled and reinstalled it because It's not as annoying and functionality-impairing as I seem to remember. I dunno. Besides, there's a ton of updates your not getting if you don't have SP2 installed.

They put built-in wireless support too.

Don't you mean IMPROVED wireless support?
I've definitely used Windows-based wireless on my old SP1 laptop. I dunno if it needed drivers, but Windows managed it.

Yeah, it's there, and if you only need to connect to open networks which broadcast their SSID from routers made before SP2, then you'll be fine. WEP will even work too, but it's a real pain to get going. SP2's wireless support is much improved.

usb2 has worked a while before sp2, but I guess the gamebridge requires both due to how it sends and takes the data.

E] lol punctuation Well, yeah, even Windows 98 with support software can DO wireless. I guess I just meant that by SP2 it became as natural to the system as needing a driver.

I'm just saying that I didn't use any support software, like, say, my ME-toting mom does.
But it is 100% true that XP SP2 has better WiFi support than SP1, whatever its shape may be.
