*reloads shotgun* Anyone else think they're clever?
Also, the noises stopped after I terminated a program unrelated to the screensavers, so no worries.

Before I begin to mess with them, SCRs are pretty much just Executables. Not suspecting anything of Epon at all (but maybe where he got them from, dunno), have these been pretty thoroughly virus-scanned? Haha, and I just ran them trustfully. :E In related news -- SCRs aren't just "pretty much" executables, they are in fact totally executables.

I think it's possible to embed an executable in lots of other files, too -- including MS-DOS links. This is REALLY dangerous because Windows XP does NOT show the extension of links, even if you have extensions enabled. That means a completely harmless looking file ("Oh, it's just a JPEG") can be malicious. You have to make sure to look for the small shortcut icon!

That means a completely harmless looking file ("Oh, it's just a JPEG") can be malicious. You have to make sure to look for the small shortcut icon! True dat. But an even more malicious virus types would know that you can change the shortcut arrow to become nothing: Just to push a word correction, an executable isn't "embedded" into a shortcut, but rather the shortcut points to the executable file. Ah, in the early days of spam, when I was one of the glorious AOL users, I actually believed some girl had emailed me her pictures. "Oh, that .EXE must just be a self-extracting archive. I'm a geek so I know these things. Let's open it and ... hmm, nothing seemed to happen. Oh look, a strange smiley icon is now in my ALT+TAB list. :(" Never really did find out what that was for. Fortunately virus types weren't too smart back then. A little ALT+CTRL+DEL plus a delete cleaned that up.

I could have sworn you could actually have an executable in an MS-DOS link. Huh.
And you kinda have to execute a command before the shortcut icon will disappear.
