It's not like they are planning to bring back Spaceworld. So how come they do not showcase their own games or any other special announcements at Japan's most prominant gaming convention?

It's because they hate you.
But seriously, I didn't know they weren't at TGS. That is a little weird. Perhaps they're trying to keep an air of suspense aroudn themselves?

I think they hold some press conference or something right before, but it is really weird. It's like they got into a battle with the organizers.
And considering they didn't reveal launch date/price at Leipzig like rumored (at least not yet), they're running out of prominent opportunities to do it.

As far as I know, they never appeared at all in TGS. The main reason is that they did their own show--Spaceworld. But since the last Spaceworld was in 2001(I think) I think it would be in their best interest to participate in TGS since their competitors does. I mean Sony's really generating hype this year with Kutaragi headlining the keynote and having several playable PS3 games there and god knows how many PS2/PSP titles. I also believe MS may be showcasing their games also despite the fact the Xbox 360 isn't really popular there. At least they are trying.
Seriously, the Wii could generate more interest in that region and sway people from looking into the PS3 in the future or encorage many others to purchase the Wii instead of sticking to the PS2.

All Nintendo needs to sway people away from the PS3 is it's pricetag.

Yes, but that doesn't change the fact that many of us are sick of not knowing definitive release and price info on the Wii...
...although I've heard some very, very interesting near confirmations on that issue...

I thought Nintendo said they weren't going to compete with others this time around Yeah but isn't TGS just mostly showing off games and stuff? This is rather odd.

I wouldn't be surprised if the "Not appearing at TGS" was Yamauchi's idea.

But pimp daddy Yamauchi isn't heading the company anymore, Iwata is.
Also, I thought Nintendo revealed the Wiimote before TGS.
