Okay, so I'm setting some new icons for various filetypes on my computer. However, when I try to go in and change one of the ones that plays with winamp (Mainly MP3 and Wav) It changes the icon for every filetype that plays with winamp. How do I fix this annoying thing?

Select which filetypes you wish Winamp to play by default and then choose the icon. That should do it.

It appears I can only change that icon to a set number of defaults, and it still affects every format that winamp plays. Is there a way to make it so that the files still play in winamp by default but have different icons?

Yes, there is. But you will have to do some file association work by hand. (These instructions are based on an XP system, but can be slightly modified to be backwards-compatible.)
1. Go in the Winamp file types box in the options. Make a note of which file types you want it to play. Then, deselect them all. 2. Open any Windows Explorer window (such as My Computer) and go in Tools > Folder Options. Then go in the File Types tab.
Now, repeat these steps for each file type you want: 3. Check to see if the file type is in the list already. Sometimes this happens if that type was associated with a different program (say, WMP) before it was Winamp. If so, delete it. 4. Click on 'New'. Type in the file extension, and hit OK 5. With your new type selected at the top of the list, hit Advanced. 6. In this dialog box you can choose any icon you want. Unfortunately, you will have to add back Winamp file actions by hand (Open, Enqueue, etc.) 7. To do this, click on 'New...'. In the dialog box, under action, type in "&Play in Winamp" or "&Enqueue in Winamp" or whichever action you are adding. These are all the things that will appear on the right-click menu for that file type. Note that the ampersand (&) before a letter will cause that letter to be the shortcut key on the menu - the letter with the underline on it. 8. Add the actions you want back, and then make sure to hit 'Set Default' on the "Play" action (unless you want it to behave otherwise!). Then OK out of the Advanced box and repeat from step 3.
Finally, OK out of everything. Your explorer should "refresh" to reflect your changes. Fun, huh?
For your reference, these are the default action settings for Winamp file types:
Action: &Play in Winamp Application used to perform action: "C:\Program Files\Winamp\winamp.exe" "%1" (keep the quotes; adjust your path accordingly, if necessary) Use DDE: checked DDE Message: blank Application: winamp DDE Application Not Running: blank Topic: System
Action: &Enqueue in Winamp Application used to perform action: "C:\Program Files\Winamp\winamp.exe" /ADD "%1" (again, change path if needed) and with all the same 'Use DDE' settings
Action: Add to Winamp's &Bookmark List Application used to perform action: "C:\Program Files\Winamp\winamp.exe" /BOOKMARK "%1" (again, change path if needed) and, again, with all the same 'Use DDE' settings.

In all honesty, this could all be done pretty swiftly with a .reg file, but I don't think it's a generally good idea to be screwing around with someone's HKCR before examining it first.
