I hooked up my Genesis for old time's sake. After about a week or two of off and on regular use now I have problems.
The picture and sound are all fuzzy when I turn the thing on. I've tried switching the channels using the box on the cord that connects it to the TV. Last night, that did the trick, but now it seems I have a busted Genesis. Is this the case? Is it broken or is there something I'm missing?

It could just as easily be a bad cable, so try that first if you can. But... the thing is like 15 years old, it wouldn't be shocking if something broke.

If you're getting ANY sort of sound or picture out, definately try a replacement cord. I had a worn-out one that would only work if the cord was kept suspended.
They're easy to get on Ebay, just make sure it's the one you need. Hey, you could even upgrade to composite =P I have a Master System using one.
As an emergency measure, try cleaning the contacts of the cord with rubbing alcohol. Sometimes that can help.

sw33t. Thanks, guys. I'll try it. I think I just might have to get a new cord. Oh well.. better than getting a new Genesis.

The only down of getting a new Genesis is that Sega CD and 32x arent compatible with the Genesis III's

Blues, the systems are nearly indestructable due to their minimal moving parts and sound construction. I have NEVER had a cart-based baby break. EVER. It can happen, but it's rare. Now, 32x components, those babies I've heard stories about. They break mostly because people kept taking them in and out. Why boggles the mind there weren't too many specially chipped games that the 32x hated. Virtua Racing for the Genesis is the only one I know of. Oddly, it is also the only home version with the actual Acropolis intact, at least it was as of the Saturn game. Hrrrm. I got my cords from a dude with an ebay shop named The Electric Quarter. He also has bit drivers for souls who like tampering with things <3. One does not simply open an SNES with a phillips head!

I've never had a console break on me either, well none that were my fault at least.
Brother somehow dropped a TV on a PSX once. I've had to install a new 72 pin connector into an NES I bought from Funcoland. I bought a busted Saturn and was lucky enough to get a new one for cheap from someone here.
My biggest tragedy however was Super Mario All-Stars for some reason no longer letting me use control type a, that upset me greatly as it was my first or second game i ever owned. ah well

That's freaky. Defective games, I have had. I got this used copy of Burning Force that just won't load. I opened it up, but there's no visable damage. It's spoooky. Then there was that X2 which had crazy 3D issues, which should be replaced soon =\. For console deaths, my first PS died a long time ago, I had a Saturn fry itself and a PS2 croaked. Still, all were replaceable. It's just going to be a problem if the Turbo Duo decided to kill itself I wuvs it, but they're not very common... My NES needs a new pin, too. How easy is it to install?...
