I heard about this game on GAF and it seems to have a following here. As far as I know it is a 2D platformer, available as a full download - oh, and that it is damn good.
Could anyone educate me on what Cave Story actually is - and why it is good.
Opinions.

It's a very deep, rewarding game to explore, with some harrowing fights and platforming (and multiple paths and endings), but it doesn't become complex or difficult to follow. It reminds me of Drill Dozer in that way (Cave Story came first, though), it's more of an NES design mentality, but it works.
Plus, flying with the machine gun.

Awesome game, developed by a single Japanese guy in his free time over about two years. It really just feels like a brilliantly crafted game that is complete. Download here: agtp.romhack.net/doukutsu.html

Old news. Thank you, come again. Did you read his post? He didn't say "GEE WHIZ LOOK AT THIS COOL GAME I FOUND!!" he's saying "Gee whiz look at this cool game. Tell me about it." I haven't really played it much but yeah. Everyone says it is cool as heck and I need to play it. Add it to my mountain of games I need to play.. Its so simple and fun from what little I've played though.

Milo: The swimming fish boss, "Ironhead"? He shouldn't be hard - in fact, you get rewarded if you defeat him in the VERY first time he swims by. ; I recently linked to a fan-made "Extended Version" of Cave Story (translated, complete with editing program packed-in) in another topic, too. For the interested: doukutsu.rdy.jp/stored/up0157.exeAnyway... What Cave Story is, and why it's good. Cave Story is a 2D side-view free roaming platformer, sorta comparable to Metroid. You play as Quote, a small chap who finds himself in a cave with no memory of how or why he got there, or even who he's supposed to be. Early in the game, you meet a race of rabbit-like people called Mimiga's. Scared at first, the Mimiga's soon trust you and let you know that they're being terrorized by an evil man who is known as "The Doctor". He randomly sends out Misery and Balrog, his two minions, to kidnap Mimiga's to make them work for him, and has anyone killed who defies him. None of the Mimiga's know exactly why, but the Doctor's purposes soon become clearer as the story progresses. Why it's such a good game? Cave Story is a teriffically well thought-out game with challenging worlds, a good amount of bosses, several interesting weapons that can be upgraded and swapped on the fly, many endearing characters, a fair share of tragic moments, and at times, even a decent dose of humor. The translation job is superb; the dialogues seriously make the characters come to life, and you'll often start imagining voices to go with the texts - at least, I did. There are three different endings to pursue; bad, regular and best, with MANY different varieties and ways to gain different items and weapons. Of course, obtaining the best ending is the hardest; it requires both a keen eye in exploration, as well as the ability to withhold yourself from certain items and bonuses at an earlier stage... All in all... I seriously would have paid good money to play this game had it not been free. It's that good.

In... the beginning?
Check the shack on the bottom right of Mimiga Village. Walk around in there.

Nothing in there... Is Toroko supposed to pop up after a little bit?

OH! wait, I forgot. She's supposed to appear at the fishing spot first. To the left. She'll run right by you, but before you can find her next, you have to proceed further to the left - you'll find something sparkling in the water. Get it.

Now I'm in Sandzone. Having a big headache trying to get the 4 puppies for the old woman. Found the one in the old house, but I still have to use the sandcroc to get to it.

There's one... I think in the bedroom at the place you met Curly. There's another one in a place where you have to find a hidden hole in the wall (marked by a pawprint).
Minor questions on your progress: -Did you find the Bubbler (recommended)? -Did you choose to swap the Polar Star for the Machine Gun (not neccesarily recommended, but useful for first time players)?

I lost my save game, but I never beat the final secret boss (the final level alone was a huge headache for me, I only ever GOT to the boss once), I should probably play through it again and get the Spur, but I wuvs my Machine Gun so... ;_; I almost can't fathom playing without it.

I've written up a bit of a FAQ on "Final Secret Boss" which was made partially from own experience, and partially from watching speedrun videos. If you get that far again and think you need it, lemme know.
In a nutshell though.... The final boss is do-able if you have the Machine Gun. Just don't use it against him; level 2 Blade is great for the first and third forms - for 2nd and 4th, be sure to have Lv 3 missiles.
Oh... and for the love of Jenka's puppies, be sure to save the Health Jar 'till you're there. Don't make the same mistake I did - I used it up at Monster X, and found myself starting the whole game from the beginning just so I could have that health jar at the final boss.

Yeah, I'll take that FAQ.
This edited/extended version though, what's different about it? Would I be better off playing the original translation?

Bubbler's in the fireplace in one of the houses at Mimiga Village. Bring Jelly Juice.
Ku: As for the edited/extended version of Cave Story... It's really quite well made, it adds a sizeable (optional) bit of extra quest to the story; as well as an alternate, more difficult way to get the Good Ending if you missed any of the criteria to get it. AND it offers a way to... obtain the Spur even if you swapped the Polar Star for something else earlier... Anyway, to visit the "new area", get an extra set of explosives from Malco, and bring it with you to the "Damaged Revisit" of the Egg Corridor.

OK, here it comes:
BALLOS BOSS TACTIC COULD POSSIBLY BE SPOILEROUS SNAPE KILLS DUMBLEDORE
OK, so you got past the press, hopefully got all your life intact or at least are still equipped with a Health Jar. One of the things you'll REALLY want to have here is a MAXED OUT SUPER MISSILE LAUNCHER. For extra ammo, be sure to check the large room full of fallen angels JUST before the Giant Press boss. There's a shootable block there, with a chest under it that holds a 24 extra missile expansion for you. Oh Yeah. For weapon upgrade triangles, check the top-right room after you defeated the Giant Press. Shoot all the statues until they break. You can also get heart and missile ammo powerups, it's random. Now, make sure that you got as much of those missiles as you can.
BALLOS - PRIEST FORM
Quite easy to avoid once you got his pattern down. Dodge like you would a mad bull, jump right over him, he'll jump and dash in mid-air right back to you. His movement pattern remains the same, but the distance changes depending how far you're off. Keep dodging! Shoot him when you can with regular weapons. Possibly a charged Spur if you have it, otherwise a Level 2 Blade works well. Use a minimum of missiles on this form, if any at all. Eventually he'll fly in the air and shoot lightning at you; stay away from the crosshairs. After you defeat the first form...
BALLOS FORM 2 - BALL MODE
If possible, you might want to take advantage of the loads of enemies that appear now to stock up on health, weapon energy, and missiles. Careful you don't take more damage then you replenish, though. Heads up for one more crosshair, 'cause Ballos comes down like a big discoball and crashes the party! Careful not to get caught under him. Now, here's a tactic I learned off some wacky Japanese speedrun video. Stand in his eyesocket and nuke his face with missiles. Pound that shoot button like mad, or use Turbofire if you got it on your joypad. Careful though, you're still gonna need some of your missiles after this! Try to keep around 20-25 in stock, or defeat more of those flying imps. Next up...
BALLOS FORM 3 - GEAR MODE
Easiest form of the four. Ballos summons a number of platforms around him, and starts to revolve around the chamber like a humongous clockwork gear. As expected, the safest place to be when a huge gear approaches you would be in one of the dents. Now, shoot out all the eyes on all the platforms. Recommending a normal straight forward weapon like any of the three Polar Star trade-offs, a Level 2 Blade, or turn around and let Curly handle the matter with her friendly Nemesis. BE CAREFUL for the SKULLS that drop from the ceiling. They don't do extreme damage, but any bit of life counts in here, and if you're careless, they can whittle you down badly. And they decrease precious weapon energy, of course.
Now... After shooting out all the platforms, he summons another row of platforms around him, starting to look like the first boss of Fantasy Zone. Quickly jump on one of those outer platforms, 'cause spikes will come from the floor, and they do nasty damage. Now, here's one more tactic I learned from aforementioned speedrun video... Taking a hit for the team, (you DO have life left, do you? If you still have the Health Jar, now's the time to use it.) jump through those platforms, and YET AGAIN, rest safely in one of his eyesockets. Swap to missiles, and wait.....
BALLOS FORM 4 - UGLY BABY-EATING HELLSPAWN
THE MOMENT Ballos opens its eyes and mouth, use the same tactic you did on form 2; Massive Missile spam in the eye. If you've kept enough Lv3 missiles, he's a goner. In case you haven't, swap to Level 2 Blade, or turn around and have Curly's Nemesis finish the job. One thing that's of note here is that in this form, Ballos isn't just vulnerable in the eye anymore; his entire face can take the hurt. But the eyesocket is still the most convenient spot to dish out the punishment.
Sit. Watch ending.
