well of course XD It'd be stupid not to makes sure.
But Nintendo doesn't have quite the same philosophy as Microsoft. I trust when Nintendo says backwardly compatible, they mean it.

No, I have a shelf that already has a TV, upon which sits a VHS player, beside which sits a DVD player and on the other side of which sits a Game Cube. Not to mention DVDs and games too innumerable to count. I am very glad to see that it's not a behemoth, like the others. Well, once you get the Wii, you can sell/toss out the 'cube at any rate. Y'know, backwards compatibility and everything. Except that my uber awesome Gameboy Player will now become useless! ;_;

If rumors are to be believed, GC games will run on the Wii rather easily, as the Wii hardware is essentially a beefed up GC - similiar to how the DS is really just a beefed up GBA.

Like microsoft with the 360, we probably will NOT be seeing every game BC'ed on the Virtual Console. Mainly games from Rare like Perfect Dark and Golden Eye, due to the fact that they are now owned by microsoft (why the fuck did they buy microsoft for 300 million again?)

I still really look forward to the Virtual Console. The idea of letting independant companies put up games on it could really be awesome.
Plus, I have never owned an SNES or an N64. I've just been buying remakes. Among the games I've never played but would like to now:
Super Mario World (DEEPEST REGRET) Earthbound (Second deepest regret!) Star Fox 64 The two Mario Karts Ice Climber
And games I've not played in ages like the first Zelda and Kid Icarus. D:
...TOTALLY IRRELEVANT BUT UH
Yeah, the wii is small.

While the original Perfect Dark is unlikely, I could see Goldeneye as a stretch. They'd just need to get approval from Activision (who currently own the Bond game license) and Rare. And anyone who's taking Cassamassina's comments seriously need to really reconsider their opinion. Speaking of which, what about games from companies that no longer exist?

A thought. Will the Wii accept GCN memory cards, or will I have to start all my games over?
'Cause, you know, playing through my Sonic games again is one thing, but catching six billion Pidgeys and Zigzagoons so I can move all my Pokémon from Colosseum and XD onto my GBA games and from there to Wii-based storage is a whole other can of Wurmples.

Unfortunately, it's a two way road. From reports at e3, any GCN games will HAVE to use GCN memory cards. No flash memory saving will be availiable for GCN games.

Will Wii games be able to save to GCN memory cards?

I don't think so, but the Wii comes with 512 Meg of internal storage (sort of like the Saturn did), so saves will probably just plunk on that by default. If you end up needing more space, you buy SD-cards instead of proprietary memory cards, or possibly even invest in a USB hard drive (how open that's going to be is still in question, but Iwata himself suggested it in a pre-E3 interview), which will be cheaper in the long-run.
But in the meantime, the internal storage should last you a good while unless you're a complete downloading fiend.

The Saturn had a save-on-battery feature, but you needed to remove a tab from the battery to get it to work, which I didn't figure out until I found the Saturn manual when cleaning up a few months ago, which happened to be AFTER I bought a replacement battery...

I still haven't got my internal battery to work on that Saturn I bought awhile back ago. Damn it, I wanna play NiGHTS.
