Yeah, it's been known for a while. I think some Nintendo rep (may have been Reggie, in fact) said it was about the size of 3 plastic GameCube game cases stacked on top of one another.
The PS3 actually looks like the biggest in that bunch.

IIRC, the PS3 is bigger than the original XBox, ever so slightly.
So... HUEG LIEK PS3?

The tray-less drive is a horrible idea, I know they want to make it look sleek but how can you not get a GC disc lost inside it?

Ooh! This means it will fit on the shelf! Unlike the hulking monstrosities of the XBox 360 and the PS3

You know, with this small size, I kinda opt for a return of jewel CD cases like in the Playstation or Dreamcast days.
Or at least good plastic ones that are as sturdy as a DVD case, and as slim as a jewel case, because these DVD sized boxes are eating up my room.

No, I have a shelf that already has a TV, upon which sits a VHS player, beside which sits a DVD player and on the other side of which sits a Game Cube. Not to mention DVDs and games too innumerable to count. I am very glad to see that it's not a behemoth, like the others.

can't you stack your VHS and DVD player and put your systems of top? Pyramids are rad.

Yeah, DVD cases sized like jewel cases should do it, really. I mean, half the space in DVD cases is superfluous... On a side note, poor PS3. I wonder what Sony is thinking. I mean, I can't understand how can they go on with a project that will obviously flop...

Don't put them down just yet, this is going to be the ultimate test of what an established brand name with a large following and a good marketing budget and decent developer support can stand up to. Personally, I think the price really sinks it, but it would be remiss to count Sony out of the race just yet. Hopefully it'll be a good learning experience all around and I hope I'll be able to play some really good games somewhere in the process.

I could see Nintendo modding DS cases to hold CDs as a case for the Wii, they are about the size of Jewel cases after all

Hopefully it'll be a good learning experience all around and I hope I'll be able to play some really good games somewhere in the process. I dunno. There was an article on 1up somewhere written by Jeremy Parish (ToastyFrog, for those who knew him pre-1up), and the PS3 really shares a lot of similiarities with how Nintendo worked with the N64. A Growing frusteration between 3rd party developers, a non-standard and expensive media format, an egotistical over-reliance on brand-name to sell the system, even similiar advertising campaigns ("Change the system" vs. Sony's PS3 "Welcome Change" banners all over E3). I think there was a few more, but I'd have to find the article. Based on that, the "Ultimate Test Of Brand Identity" has already been cast - Nintendo, one of the kings of the 16bit Console wars, pretty much fell flat on it's face in the next generation, losing almost all of it's 3rd party support to then-newcomer, Sony. It's very possible the same thing may be in store for Sony - perhaps losing all their developers to Microsoft, or, going out on a limb, maybe even back to Nintendo again.

Y'know, backwards compatibility and everything.

Okay, some good points there, and you're right, Sony came to power in the first place because the competition got cockey. There's one main difference that springs to mind though, back then video game players were more 'hardcore' who generally knew more about what was going on in the industry. Nowadays there are a lot more casual gamers who may buy on brand names, not to mention high powered games consoles are more highly regarded by people who put together expensive home entertainments systems. But then again the former may be turned off by the high price point and there may not be enough of the latter to make enough of a contribution to the target audience. Personally, I think things look bad for Sony, but I'm still interested in seeing exactly how things roll out.

Actually, I'm not sure if the Cube should be thrown out yet. 'd test all my games first. Y'know how Microsoft handled "Backwards compatibility" (although Nintendo's is probably more easily compatible, but then again, Genesis Model 3...)
