Well, Nero, I use an NEC/Mitsubishi LCD1560V+ BK 15" LCD monitor (with black casing), and the thing has done me well for the past two years. I'd recommend the NEC/Mitsubishi brand all the way. (For reference, my monitor cost about $230, but I saw white ones for about $180 just now.) How I would go about buying a monitor, though, I would recommend searching and comparing on PriceGrabber.com. When I custom built my computer two summers ago, it was a great was to look up the different brands and their parts, and compare everything.
Hopefully, that was helpful to you, and Pricegrabber can find some monitors hella cheap-enough for you.

Flat panels suck ass, for a lot less money you can get a CRT which is bigger, cooler, oldschool, and if you whack people with it they won't get up.

I'll be bringing my trusty CRT to my dorm, but I know entirely what you mean-- these things are bloody huge, space-wise.

Concurring on the CRT/dorm problem. When I made the initial move, I found that my 17" ViewSonic flat-screen CRT took up roughly a quarter of my total desk space. Circa late 2003 I bought a knock-off brand ("Kogi") 17" LCD, and while some image crispness was sacrificed, it was a terrific bargain at the time ($299; prices have come down significantly now), and it still works well without any dead pixels or other visual defects . . .
My ViewSonic CRT is still a lot better for serious image editing and stuff, but the LCD is great for everyday use.
