I tried to learn how to do nes rom hacking and I got all the different programs they recommend. So I took mario, started changing the graphics. Made him bald and gave him sunglasses. Then I started changing some of the text, but somewhere along the way I messed something up and now the game is one level long. So uh check it out. yousorrymon.t35.com/MARIO.zip

The minus world is created because any block of data the correct length can be interpreted by the SMB engine as a level. Then the game is passed an 8-bit integer, 0 through 255 (or -128 through 127 if it is signed, which I forget if it is or not), it uses this number to calculate an offset in the game which it starts reading as level data. IIRC, the minus world is generated with the number 36 (hexadecimal 24), but you can use any 8-bit hex number to generate a level offset. It's been a while since I've done this, but if you can find the numbers used to represent the first set of warp pipes, you can change them to anything you want. IIRC, many of them will crash the game, and many of them are the same level, but it's fun to mess around with. You can get some fun results like a water level with a night-time (black) background. It seems in this case you have managed to start the game using 0 instead of 1, and may have changed some of the data red from that offset. I'm not sure.
Oh, and nice "Thank you Mario!" text there.
