It looks just like this and this and this and this and this I'm aware this is a genre, but they just look so alike that I can't even tell them apart. Are they by the same creator? The same studio? This is the anime equivalent of all those bands you hear on the radio that sound the same. What's so special about this one?

Roflmao. Almost all of those examples are Harem anime, Gagaman. A genre based entirely around fanservice.
Haruhi is NOT a Harem anime, Haruhi is a Psychological Science Fiction Comedy.

Inability to differentiate. Another unfortunate side-effect of anti-otakudom.

How's that unfortunate? They all have the same eyes, same poses, same expressions. They all looks as though they were drawn by the same person. It's no different to a lot of the American cartoons on the TV that look exactly the same, as in the Dexter's Lab rip-off look everyone does now (See Kim Possible, Teenage Robot etc).
As for the genre of Haruhi, honestly had no idea what genre it was supposed to be judging from artwork (which, including screen shots were mostly fan service). It certainly doesn't look like a sci-fi, that's for sure. It looks like harem, without the bloke with glassies in the middle of it all.

Well, Haruhi is a series that DOES have it's blatant fan service and cute girls. And make no mistake, this DOES attribute to its popularity, whether certain people will admit it or not. HOWEVER, it is a series that relies on a lot more than that, through it's interesting storyline and characters. But I'm not really doing this much justice, and besides I'm a guy who still likes Love Hina.
If you want to talk to someone who really liked this series and isn't just your typical "OMG HOT GIRLS" type of Otaku and has a more trustworthy opinion, talk to Jolly. I know when this series was coming out, she was really enjoying it, and I think she still does unless her opinion has changed on the matter.

Hmm...what? Oh yeah, I still like Haruhi and I'm interested in a supposed second season(after Kyoto Animation finish that Kanon stuff-I-wouldn't-touch-with-10-foot-pole-seeing-that-its-anime-based-on-a-h-game). And no, Haruhi isn't a harem anime, it was just animated by a company that previously animated a harem anime. XD There are a few fanservice bits involving Mikuru which are mocked because it is fanservice and Mikuru is a wimpy moe parody. Roflmao. Almost all of those examples are Harem anime, Gagaman. A genre based entirely around fanservice. Not only that, but the first picture is from the Read or Die T.V. series, I believe. Is that even actually a harem anime? As Rob said, the anime are based on novels that are not harem based on anyway. The main character of the series is told from the point of view of the skeptical Kyon, but it revolves around the eccentric Haruhi who wants to form a club made up of primarily of aliens, espers, dimension sliders, and time travelers. Naturally, everybody, including Kyon think she is a weirdo, but actually these type of people/creatures exist in their world because...well, if I say too much I would be giving it away. It sounds so odd to hear someone who is interested in animation to say generally all Y-cartoons look the same as X-cartoon without picking up certain differences between the cartoons, for example KP's character lines are much thinner and the animation is more smother than MLAATR's. Though this probably seems pretty hypocritical of me as I think I said something similar to this a long time ago. If you are unsure what to think of Haruhi, Gaga, you could always check out the translations of the novels...which is available on the net somewhere(could someone provide a link). The anime is based on those.

I don't pick up certain differences between cartoons I'm not interested in =P Seriously though, that's a good point. I probably could distinguish these series' from each other if I...well, cared for them. It's like picking out the differences from all those talking animal CGI films we got this year, it's just not worth it. I'd rather pick out the ones that really stand out than ones that are vaguely different to each other.

after Kyoto Animation finish that Kanon stuff-I-wouldn't-touch-with-10-foot-pole-seeing-that-its-anime-based-on-a-h-game). If it makes you feel better about the show itself, most shows-based-on-eroges, like Tsukihime, Fate/Stay-Night, To Heart 2, and probably Kanon, leave in VERY LITTLE of their H-game roots - people who don't know better wouldn't have any idea.

I probably wouldn't like it. Everything like this that people obsess over I always find disinteresting and overrated. How bout that Homestar Runner? SHUT UP I'M OVER THAT PHASE ;.; (god just when I thought I knew what being owned felt like this comes like a swift kick in the face. ;. I dunno. What I really should have just said was that Haruhi, like 99% of anime, just does not grab me at all. I go on first impressions before anything and...it just seems like some silly anime that's all "ha ha we sort of mock our own anime stereotypes but throw in a neat plot now fangirls at Deviantart will make choppy GIFs with like 3 frames of animation from our show because it has cute girls in it". ...I mean no offense if you like it or anything. I'm sure that if you're into anime it's pretty good. Umm. I'm just, like. Not. WHEN DID THIS BECOME ABOUT ME LIKING THINGS I LOVE DERAILING TOPICS DYAAAHHHH OH YES So guys how about that Haruhi possibly being licensed !!

Although I haven't seen Haruhi, isn't it hypocrytical to disreguard something based solely on it's generic art style when your own art style is also not that unique either?

View the page source to that site, and switch your character encoding to EUC-JP, and you'll see this: 禁則事項は12月22日に公表します. Basically, "Classified information will be announced on December 22nd." I'm going to say "parallels the novels, eh?" and leave it at that. They've changed the message to "北米計画が発効した。". I did some translating and it basically says "The plans for North America has come into effect." or something like that, to that effect.

Hey now, what's that got to do with anything? Do I have to like everything that looks better than my own art now? Also, I hope you're not basing my "art style" on Manga-Gaga, as I'm moving on from that. Evan just took the words right out of my mouth on the subject. I'm just not interested in this series and would rather see some of the more unique stuff that is made in Japan released here, is all.

Haruhi is unique. You're just under the assumption that its art style and count of female characters makes it generic. Contrary to what you may think, Haruhi was the most unique anime experience I've had in all my years as a fan of anime. I'd strongly urge you to see it, but you're already hopeless in that regard.

My favorite part about this website is the fact it sounds like they're making a religion out of Haruhi.

An art style doesn't make a series. If all you care about is looks then that's very shallow of you.

Not a chance are looks all I look for in animation. An original, compelling story, interesting characters, technical brilliance or even just a good laugh are just some of the things I look for. I may be slagging off this series for looking generic, but if I went ahead and watched it, there's a chance I may enjoy it, but from everything I've heard of the series so far, it just hasn't grabbed my attention or stood out in any way for me. I'm not just judging this from screen shots and artwork, but also from plot summaries.
It's a simple case of...if the series doesn't interest me, I don't go ahead and watch it. Sadly, a lot of anime nowadays doesn't interest me so much unless it does something that helps it stand out, simply because there is so much of aroundnow that just appaer to be clones of others. Some examples: the loose style of Samurai Champloo, he gipping plots of Satoshi Kon films, the incredibly anarchic animation of Imaishi (Dead Leaves), the beautifully painted backdrops and rich attention to detail of Studio Ghibli and hell, the bizarre humor of Bobobo-Bobobobo.
If I was making myself look like a bit of a visual whore, than I didn't intend to. There's just so much truly inspiring animation out there from all over the world that we will never see released over here, even from Japan despite how much of their animation gets released here now. If looks where all I was after in a cartoon, I would never watch Aqua Teen, the Simpsons, South Park or even Shrek (I think Shrek's visuals are ugly, but the films are still funny...for now).
