Hm, all I can say is hover your mouse over the links in emails that they want you to click on and look at the URL in the status bar at the bottom of the browser before actually clicking it. I get these fake e-mails all the time and always do that before even considering it to be legit. Even if the email is sent from an @paypal.com address (or any site for that matter), that definately doesn't mean that that's where the e-mail came from.
Good luck getting this sorted out Blaze, sincerely.

+1 there. It sounds like you've got things sorted out. Hopefully there hasn't been any unauthorized activity on your account?

I missed this before: I think we found the problem. Oh jeeze, go stroke your pocket protector or something. =P I use Firefox, isn't that enough!? You nerds never give up! "omg he is using hotmail!1111" I suppose it wouldn't help to say it was MSN mail, but I log in through Hotmail because I hate starting up MSN8 or 9 or whatever the hell it's up to. I have a Gmail account, but it's a massive hassle to change my email address. I've still got some services pointing to my old Blazehgehg@aol.com email that I never updated when I got Blazehgehg@msn.com, for example. Of course, this wouldn't be a problem if Microsoft allowed email forwarding like Gmail. (but no, of course not, we can't be user friendly if it means giving our competition any sort of edge whatsoever, can we!)

I think he's trying to say that Hotmail accounts are spam/phishing magnets, not a crappy service.
Or, at least. that's my opinion that I don't necessarily share with Squigs.

I'm just tired of people bitching because I use (x) Microsoft service. It's the same arguement as to why people aren't switching from IE to Firefox - like Kulock. All that "YOU REALLY SHOULD SWITCH, SWITCH NOW, DO IT" really, really wears down your nerves very fast, all because you make a simple choice not to use whatever is suggested to you.

But Hotmail did warn me. It told me the sender ID for the email could not be found, and that the email was forwarded. That should've tipped me off moreso than even the "we will never ask for your username and password".

No, Oni's right. Of course, putting your e-mail address out on the Internet is bound to get some spam, but Hotmail actually sells your new address out to their affiliates to spam, who sell it to others, etc. Even if you register an account and never use it, you're going to get spam to the account, and quite a fair amount I might add.

Actually, the only spam I get on my old Hotmail account is from either Lycos UK (my old host), 50megs (my REALLY OLD host) or MSN. I just deselected all of the sponsor spam options when I signed up.

That's certainly not been my experience with the service. I've periodically just registered accounts to see how bad it is, and logged in every month or so to find it clogged with spam. I even opted out of all the spam stuff too.

I have hotmail accounts that I've had for a few years now and didn't submit them anywhere and I have yet to get any spam or junk e-mail.. ..just FYI.

To tell you the truth, I've actually gotten more spam on my non-public Gmail account than I have on my public Hotmail account.

I hadn't gotten any spam on my gmail account until I wanted to test the spam filter. So I submitted it to some dubious sites. I have to say I'm impressed. It has let through perhaps 5 pieces of junk mail and had no false positives. And so far, GMail, unlike hotmail, has not given VIP whitelist treatment to spam agencies who give them money.
