Pardon the self-serving topic, but someone here might know.
Basically, the name that keeps coming to mind is the one on sale at RightStuf: Fushigi Yugi: The Mysterious Play, but upon reading the Wikipedia entry, I'm not sure that's it.
Basically, it was something like... this figure was being romanced by thirteen women or something like that... it's not a hentai, it is a "harem" anime, but not in the annoying style, it was supposed to be well-written... supposed to be one of the classics, and it has a name like Fushigi Yugi, but I'm not sure that's the one I'm thinking of.
It just came to mind again recently, and when I remember hearing talk about it, it was really highly regarded. So I'm just trying to figure out what I'm thinking of. Any ideas? (Joke posts unappreciated.)
Again, we're not talking Tenchi Muyo or Negima or anything cheeseball.

Hmm...can you give out any other clues? I'm stumped.

A harem anime that's FUNNY and not Tenchi Muyo/Ranma? Yep, I'm stumped too.
It sure as hell isn't Love Hina. That isn't funny or classic.

...I think Fushigi Yuugi might be the only one, dude.

Fushigi Yuugi is nothing like what Kulock described, though. Fushigi Yuugi is the opposite. Fushigi Yuugi is about a couple of girls who get trapped in a book about war in Feudal Japan, and they're percieved as "saviors" of two warring factions. Both girls are pitted against one another despite being friends, and both girls have seven or so guys who act as their body guards. Both girls are promised they will be allowed to go home if they complete some sort of pilgrimage to a temple or something. It's been a while...
Then again, I never saw anything past the first series - and I understand there was a second series and a couple of OVAs, so maybe something changed a bit later.

What's the gimmick for the series?

From the description of "old" and "classic", I'd be thinking Urusei Yatsura out of that list there.

Fushigi Boshi no Futago Hime? its the only "Fushigi" on the animesuki database. 5 episodes. That's a Mahou Shoujo series. And it has 51 episodes.

From the description of "old" and "classic", I'd be thinking Urusei Yatsura out of that list there. Ataru wasn't romanced by 13 women though. Was he?

That's not it, I don't think. That's the one with... darn, blanking on her name, but the girl in the tiger-striped bikini and green hair, isn't it?
Anyway, I meant it WASN'T wacky. I think it was a little bit more serious. There were either 13 women or 13 guys (or 13 pair-ups?). I'm not thinking of 12 Kingdoms either. Nothing on that list seemed familiar.
Agh. It's supposed to be one of "those" classics. I think even Blaze talked about it in detail once, or maybe I'm thinking of someone else.

Well, if I talked about it in detail, the only harem anime I've seen - wacky, serious, or otherwise - amounts to:
Fushigi Yuugi Tenchi Muyo!
and half of Tenchi Universe.
Out of them, Fushigi Yuugi is the only one that's actually serious. It's a bit girly at times (I mean, c'mon. It's a girl surrounded by like, 7 dudes), but it does have action and stuff. If you could stomach something like Sailor Moon, you'd have no problems with Fushigi Yuugi.

The character Kulock describes sounds like Lum from Urusei Yatsura.

Could be the sequel to Haruhi. It just went back in time for the sake of time paradox to appease Haruhi's boredom.
